Built by the Antalya Fair Organization Inc. (ANFAS), the new Antalya Expo Center (AEC) has begun operations with the opening of Auto Show '99. Speaking at the opening, Minister of Industry and Commerce Metin Sahin claimed that the only solution to the problems being experienced by the Turkish automotive industry was an increase in sales and that fairs could help to bring this about.

Another speaker, Sadik Badak, chairman of the ANFAS board of directors, stated that Turkey was in an extremely fortunate position from the point of view of commercial and trade fair services, lying directly between Europe and the Far East. "Around 60 percent of the volume of world trade," Badak said, "is carried on in Europe and the Far East. In addition, other Asian and African countries are progressing along the road to becoming consumer societies. The biggest fair organizer over the last 40 years has been Germany, but in the next 30 years, with developing transportation and communications technologies, it can be regarded as possible that this function will fall to our geographic region. In fact, a number of countries have started to hold export fairs in Istanbul because of our geographic location."

The AEC, Badak pointed out, was built for the purpose of introducing variety into Antalya's tourism sector and he outlined some of the advantages of staging fairs in Antalya as follows: "There is a 10 to 15 degree difference in temperature between the Antalya and German spring, autumn and winter fair sites. While the temperature is minus 2 degrees in Munich in December, it's 15 degrees in Antalya. For fair visitors, overnight accommodation costs DM 300 in Germany but only DM 30 in Antalya."

The Antalya Expo Center is opposite Antalya Airport. It has a total area of 60,000 square meters, including 16,000 square meters of covered fair area, and cost $20 million to build. It will be operated in partnership with TUYAP, Turkey's most experienced fair organization company, and aims to host 30 fairs each year. Shares in ANFAS, a joint foundation of Antalya industrialists and businessmen, tourism sector companies, the municipality and the Provincial Governor's Office, are to be offered for sale on the Istanbul Stock Exchange at the end of this year.
