Israel holds nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Jerusalem's Old City, a single square kilometre divided into four quarters (Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Armenian), contains the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Dome of the Rock within walking distance of each other. The Old City and its walls have been on the UNESCO list since 1981. The White City of Tel Aviv, with its concentration of Bauhaus architecture, was added in 2003.
Israel's Main Destinations in Detail
Jerusalem's Old City
Jerusalem's Old City is the central destination of any Israel tour. The Western Wall (Kotel) is the last remaining retaining wall of the Second Temple, destroyed in 70 AD. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built over the traditional site of the Crucifixion and burial of Jesus, stands inside the Christian Quarter and dates in its current form to the 12th-century Crusader period. The Dome of the Rock, built in 691 AD, stands on the Temple Mount (Haram al-Sharif) and is one of the oldest surviving Islamic structures in the world. All three sites are within the Old City walls and reachable on foot.
Bethlehem
Bethlehem is 10 km south of Jerusalem in the West Bank. The Church of the Nativity, built over the traditional birthplace of Jesus, dates to 565 AD in its present form and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Grotto of the Nativity beneath the church floor contains a 14-pointed silver star marking the traditional birth spot. The Church of the Nativity is managed jointly by the Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, and Roman Catholic churches.
Nazareth
Nazareth is the largest Arab city in Israel and the traditional hometown of Jesus. The Basilica of the Annunciation, completed in 1969, is the largest church in the Middle East and is built over the traditional site of the Annunciation. The Old City of Nazareth has a covered market and several significant churches within walking distance of each other.
The Sea of Galilee (Kinneret)
The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake 53 km north of Jerusalem at 209 metres below sea level, making it the lowest freshwater lake in the world. The northern shore includes Capernaum, the base of Jesus' ministry, and Tabgha, the traditional site of the Feeding of the Five Thousand. The Mount of Beatitudes, overlooking the lake, is the traditional site of the Sermon on the Mount.
The Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is shared between Israel and Jordan. The Israeli shore near Ein Bokek has hotels and public beach access. The water's salt concentration of 34 percent supports floating without swimming ability. Ein Gedi nature reserve on the Israeli shore, 20 km north of Ein Bokek, has freshwater springs and ibex trails above the Dead Sea shoreline.
Masada
Masada is a desert plateau rising 400 metres above the Dead Sea on the Judean Desert escarpment. Herod the Great built a palace complex here in the 1st century BC. The site became the location of the last Jewish revolt against Rome in 73 AD. Masada is accessible by cable car from the east side or by the Snake Path hike from the west. The UNESCO Heritage listing dates to 2001.
Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv is Israel's main international gateway and commercial centre. The White City UNESCO district holds the highest concentration of International Style (Bauhaus) architecture in the world, with approximately 4,000 buildings from the 1930s and 1940s. The Carmel Market and the old port district of Jaffa are within 20 minutes of the city centre.
Combining Israel with Other Destinations
Israel connects directly with Jordan and Egypt for regional multi-destination tours. Egypt, Jordan, and Israel combined tours cover the Pyramids, Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and Jerusalem in approximately 14 to 17 days. This is the most comprehensive Holy Land and ancient civilisations circuit we offer.
Best Time to Visit Israel
March through May and October through November are the most comfortable months for Israel travel. Jerusalem temperatures are mild, the Galilee is green, and Masada's cliff hike is manageable before summer heat.
June through September: Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are warm (28 to 34 degrees Celsius). Masada's Snake Path should be climbed before 7 am in July and August. The Dead Sea beach is hot but the water is refreshing. December through February: Jerusalem can receive rain and occasional snow on the hilltops. The Dead Sea shore remains pleasant for walks but cold for swimming. This is the least crowded season.

Most Israel packages use hotels in West Jerusalem, near the Old City. The area around King David Street and the Mamilla district is within 10 minutes' walk of the Jaffa Gate entrance to the Old City. Hotels inside the Christian Quarter of the Old City are available for travellers who want to be as close as possible to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Via Dolorosa.
