Jordan holds six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Petra and the Wadi Rum Protected Area. Petra is the most visited site in the country and one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world. The Nabataean city was carved from rose-red sandstone beginning in the 4th century BC. Wadi Rum, the protected desert valley of 720 square kilometres, appears on the World Heritage list under its combined cultural and natural landscape status.

Jordan's Main Sites Explained

Petra

Petra is reached through the Siq, a 1.2-km narrow gorge cut between sandstone cliffs rising up to 200 metres. At the end of the Siq, the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) appears: a 40-metre-tall facade carved from the cliff face by the Nabataeans in the 1st century BC. Petra's site extends far beyond the Treasury. The Street of Facades, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Colonnaded Street, the Byzantine Church, and the Monastery (Ad Deir) at the top of 800 carved steps are all part of the same archaeological zone. A Jordan Pass purchased before travel includes the Petra entry fee for multiple days.

Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is a protected area in southern Jordan covering 720 square kilometres of desert valley. Sandstone and granite formations rise up to 1,750 metres from the red sand floor. Ancient Thamudic and Nabataean inscriptions are carved into canyon walls across the valley. The area was also one of the main operational zones for T.E. Lawrence during the Arab Revolt. The standard visit includes a 2-hour 4x4 jeep safari guided by a local Bedouin operator.

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea sits on the Jordan-Israel border at 430 metres below sea level. The water's salt concentration is approximately 34 percent, which prevents sinking. The hotel beaches on the Jordanian shore provide access to the water and mineral mud, with fresh-water showers on site. Most Jordan packages include a Dead Sea swim stop or a 1-night stay at a Dead Sea resort.

Jerash

Jerash is 48 km north of Amman and holds one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. The Oval Plaza, the Cardo Maximus colonnaded street, the South Theatre (capacity 3,000), and Hadrian's Arch are structurally intact. The city was occupied from the Bronze Age and reached its peak in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.

Amman

Amman is the capital and the arrival point for most Jordan tours. The Roman Theatre in the city centre, built in the 2nd century AD with a capacity of 6,000, is a 10-minute walk from most downtown hotels. The Citadel above the city holds the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace, and an archaeological museum.

Choosing a Jordan Tour by Duration

The 3-day Amman and Petra package covers the highlights of the capital and Petra without the Dead Sea or Wadi Rum. The 5-day Jordan tour is the shortest option that fits Petra, the Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum in a single circuit. The 6-day Jordan holiday package adds Jerash and more time in Amman.

The 7-day Jordan tour and 8-day Jordan tour are the most popular lengths and cover all major sites including the Desert Castles east of Amman. The 9-day Jordan tour adds Aqaba on the Red Sea and leisure days at the beach.

Combining Jordan with Other Destinations

Jordan's geographical position makes it a natural extension for Egypt and Israel itineraries. Egypt, Jordan, and Israel combined tours connect the Pyramids with Petra, Wadi Rum, and Jerusalem in approximately 14 to 17 days. Turkey and Jordan tours link Istanbul and Cappadocia with Petra and the Dead Sea. Greece and Jordan tours connect Athens and Santorini with Amman and Petra.

Best Time to Visit Jordan

March through May and September through November are the most comfortable months for Jordan travel. Temperatures in Petra and Wadi Rum are mild, Dead Sea swimming is pleasant, and Aqaba diving conditions are at their best.

June through August: Wadi Rum and Aqaba reach 40 degrees Celsius. Petra is warm but manageable if you enter by 8 am through the Siq before the sun reaches the canyon floor. December through February: Petra is cold and can be icy in the Siq after rain. Desert nights in Wadi Rum drop below 5 degrees Celsius from November through February.

Jordan Tours FAQs

Learn more about the destinations and packages we offer.

Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea are the three sites that define a Jordan trip for most visitors. Petra's Treasury and full site require at least one full day. Wadi Rum's jeep safari covers the key formations in 2 hours. The Dead Sea provides a natural float at the lowest accessible point on Earth. Jerash, the Roman city north of Amman, is the strongest archaeological site after Petra.

Yes for most visitors. The Jordan Pass, purchased online before arrival at jordanpass.jo, includes the entry visa fee (approximately 40 JOD) and Petra entrance for 1, 2, or 3 consecutive days depending on which option you select. If you plan to visit Petra for more than one day, the Jordan Pass saves 70 to 100 USD compared to purchasing the visa and Petra entry separately.
How much does a Jordan tour cost per person in 2026?
Three-day packages start from approximately 650 to 850 USD per person. Five to six-day packages cost 1,000 to 1,400 USD per person. Eight to nine-day private tours cost 1,400 to 2,000 USD per person based on double occupancy. A single supplement applies for solo travellers in private rooms. Contact us for a current per-person quote.

Citizens of the US, UK, EU member states, Canada, and Australia obtain a visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport for a fee of approximately 40 JOD (56 USD). Alternatively, the Jordan Pass purchased online before travel includes the visa fee. Check with your nearest Jordanian embassy for current requirements.

Jordan is considered one of the most politically stable countries in the region. Its tourist areas, including Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, and Aqaba, operate with active international tourism year-round. The U.S. State Department and UK Foreign Office both classify Jordan's tourist sites under standard travel precautions. Magnificent Travel monitors conditions throughout the year.

A standard Petra day covers approximately 2 to 4 km from the visitor center through the Siq to the Treasury and surrounding tombs. Adding the Monastery trail (Ad Deir) adds 3 km and 800 carved steps. Petra is not accessible to visitors in wheelchairs in most areas. Horses and donkeys can be hired to reach the Treasury from the entrance, but most visitors walk the Siq.

Yes. Petra's site is large enough to occupy 2 full days if you want to see the Treasury area, the High Place of Sacrifice, the Royal Tombs, and the Monastery. Travelers holding a Jordan Pass can re-enter on a second morning. Contact us to extend the Petra days on your itinerary.

Private tours are fully adjustable for duration, routing, hotel category, and departure date. A 10-day version adding Umm Qais in the north, extra diving in Aqaba, or more time in Wadi Rum is available. Contact us with your travel dates for a custom itinerary and quote.

Daily breakfast is included at all hotels. Lunches and dinners are not included in standard packages. Daily food cost for lunch and dinner in Jordan is approximately 25 to 40 USD per person at local restaurants near the main sites. Wadi Rum camp packages may include dinner around the fire; confirm on the specific tour page.

Most of Jordan's sites are accessible for senior travellers at a relaxed pace. Petra's flat Siq and Treasury area are manageable for most fitness levels. The Monastery trail is steep and not recommended for those with limited mobility. Wadi Rum's jeep safari requires no walking. Amman and the Dead Sea are flat and easy to navigate.
