Travel into the mainland and you reach Delphi on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the monasteries of Meteora high above the Thessalian plain, ancient Olympia, and the archaeological sites of the Peloponnese. Athens is relatively easy to explore independently. Reaching several of Greece's major archaeological sites is a different matter.

Delphi, Meteora or the Peloponnese?
You do not necessarily need a long tour to see mainland Greece.
Delphi works well when you have limited time and want to add one of Greece's most important ancient sites to an Athens stay.
Meteora requires travelling farther north, but the setting is unlike anywhere else on a classic Greece itinerary. Historic monasteries stand on enormous rock formations above the surrounding landscape.
Travel south into the Peloponnese and the emphasis changes again. Routes can include Olympia, Mycenae, Epidaurus, and other places associated with ancient Greek history and archaeology.
Longer escorted tours can connect several of these regions rather than requiring you to choose only one.
Small Group or Private?
The route may be similar, but the experience is not quite the same.
On a small-group escorted tour, transportation and guiding are shared with other travelers and the day generally follows a scheduled program. It can be a practical way to visit several mainland sites without organizing each stage yourself.
A private tour keeps the vehicle and guiding arrangements for your own party. This can provide more flexibility with pacing and is particularly useful for families, groups of friends, or travelers who prefer a more personal touring style.

Can You Combine the Mainland with the Greek Islands?
Yes—and the contrast can work very well.
A mainland circuit is usually more focused on archaeology, history, and guided sightseeing. Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, or Rhodes can then introduce a completely different pace after the escorted portion of the journey.
Some itineraries combine the two within one program. Another option is to finish the mainland tour in Athens and continue independently to the islands.
If island time is a major part of your trip, pay attention to how many nights remain after the escorted section. Adding Santorini or Mykonos makes more sense when you have enough time to enjoy the island rather than simply arrive and leave again.
When to Tour Mainland Greece
Spring and autumn are particularly comfortable for mainland touring.
April through June and September through October generally offer good conditions for walking through archaeological sites and spending longer periods outdoors. July and August are also popular, but exposed sites such as Delphi, Olympia, and the Acropolis can become hot during the middle of the day.
Mainland touring is less dependent on the island sailing season, which also makes escorted routes worth considering outside the peak summer months.

Meteora is a complex of 6 Eastern Orthodox monasteries built on top of sandstone rock pillars 300 to 600 metres high in the Thessaly plain of central Greece. The monasteries were built between the 11th and 16th centuries by monks who used baskets and rope ladders for access before the current staircases were cut in the 1920s. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (listed 1988) and one of the most visually dramatic sites in Greece.
